| Welcome to the page of my favorite brick wall ancestor, John Spence. My obsession, is more like it! John has been most difficult to trace, because he and his wife both died young, leaving orphaned children. They lived and died during that difficult time between 1880 and 1900, and they didn't seem to leave a paper trace. There is even a possibility that John himself was an orphan! There is one 1880 census in Cherokee Co., Alabama, showing John Spence and his wife, Amanda Barkley, living next door to her father, Jasper Barkley, and her brother K. C. Barkley. One document gives the birthplace of Alonzo Spence, John's third and last child, as Cherokee Co., Alabama, in 1889. Amanda, indeed, grew up in Cherokee Co., Alabama, but there is no other record of John before 1880 or after 1889 that I have been able to find. By about 1897, Jasper Barkley sold all his land in Cherokee Co., and moved to Hunt Co., Texas, with his last son, Oscar Barkley, and the three orphaned Spence children. There were other Spences in Cherokee Co., Alabama, at the time John lived there, but I have been unable to find any connection. I am pretty sure his father is not there, but there is a possibility his uncles or cousins are there, but I haven't found the link. There are evidences of other Spence orphans, so there is the possibility that John was one of them. John Spence is not the most uncommon of names. My John indicated in the 1880 census that he was born in South Carolina. If that information is factual, and if my John made it on the censuses in 1860 and 1870 without being grossly mispelled, then I have eliminated every possibility except one, and that is John W. Spence, who was the firstborn son of Hugh Young Spence, a son of Robert Spence. Now, of course, there is always the possibility the South Carolina birthplace is in error, or if he was an orphan, and living with a family with a different last name, and his surname of Spence wasn't listed on the census, then he could still be out there. But of the Spences I have studied and traced, based on the information I have about my John, this is the one family to which I am trying hard to prove or disprove my lineage. ROBERT SPENCE) was born June 29, 1833, in Laurens Co., South Carolina, and died April 08, 1907. He married ELIZABETH JANE "JENNY" MOORE on May 08, 1856, in Hendersonville, North Carolina, daughter of CLINTON MOORE and SALLIE SHIPMAN. She was born February 03, 1834, in Brevard, Transylvania Co., North Carolina, and died February 12, 1891. Notes for WILLIAM J. SPENCE: Family oral history confirmed by Confederate and Union descendants says that William and his brothers served in the CSA, 18th SC Reg. Co. D, East District, along with his brothers, Hewie, Robert, Samuel, and Henry Tennessee. William left the CSA after they burned the family homeplace in a strategic retreat, to keep the Union from utilizing the farm's provisions. William deserted to the nearby Union line one evening while his brother, Henry Tennessee, was on guard duty. Henry told his brother William, "If you go over, I'll have to shoot you!" William told him "Then you'll just have to shoot me. I would rather be dead than to serve in an army that would burn my home." Henry shot into the air; he was sure if he didn't shoot William, the Union sentry would. Later he said he heard William's voice talking with the Union soldiers and he knew his brother was okay. William joined the NC Mounted Infantry Co. B 2nd Reg. where he was honorably discharged and later received a disability pension. After 1900 he was reunited with brothers Henry and Hewie in Alabama after he received an invitation to visit them in Alabama. William J. Spence was fishing on Lake Skie, near Forney, Texas, in April of 1907, when he fell out of the boat and drowned. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIE JASPER SPENCE (son of 1. JOHN SPENCE) was born 30 July 1885 in Cherokee Co., Alabama, and died 08 October 1964 in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co., Texas. He married (1) EFFIE GERTRUDE ADAMS 19 August 1906 in Hunt Co., Texas, daughter of HENRY DOSS ADAMS and ELLEN LOWERY. She was born June 1891 in Texas, and died 05 October 1926, in Bowie, Montague Co., Texas. He married (2) DOVIE HUFF TEER 26 July 1936 in Rains Co., Texas, daughter of JAMES HUFF and MARY "MOLLIE". She was born 12 September 1898, in Texas, and died 16 October 1963. Notes for EFFIE GERTRUDE ADAMS: Effie died in a gruesome accident. The family was moving to Mountain View, Oklahoma, when their truck broke down and they all transferred to the truck of Max Barker, who was traveling with them. Effie and the children had to sit in the back of the truck. Effie sat in a rocking chair facing the traffic behind. They were traveling through Bowie, Texas, at night, when they went under a too-low bridge, and Effie was hit in the back of the head and nearly decapitated. SPENCE: From WWI draft registration card dated June 5, 1917: Alonzo Spence signed up in Clinton, Custer Co., OK, indicates he was born Jan. 18, 1889, in Cherokee, Alabama, and he has a wife and two children.
